Modal French Terry Fabric
-- Steady & Reliable Manufacturer --
Modal french terry is a mid-weight knit fabric made from modal fiber, combining a smooth, fine-textured face with a soft loop interior for comfortable warmth and moisture management. It is a preferred choice for premium loungewear, sweatshirts, and casual everyday garments.
Introduction
Modal french terry is constructed using modal fiber — a type of regenerated cellulose derived from beech wood pulp, produced through a closed-loop process that recovers and reuses the majority of processing chemicals. The french terry structure features a smooth knit face and an interior of uncut loops, providing a balance of surface quality and interior softness that is well regarded in premium casual and loungewear markets.
Modal fiber is known for its high moisture absorption, color vibrancy, and resistance to shrinkage and pilling compared to standard viscose. Combined with the french terry construction, it produces a fabric that is comfortable against the skin, breathable, and suitable for extended wear. It is available with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification.
Nantong Tianhong Textile Technology Co., Ltd. supplies modal french terry in a range of weights and compositions, with optional spandex for added stretch and recovery. Custom color development and weight adjustments are available to support seasonal product development for brands across global markets.

Advantage
- Superior Softness: Modal fiber produces a finer, smoother yarn than standard viscose, resulting in a fabric with a notably soft hand feel that is comfortable for extended wear.
- High Moisture Absorption: Modal absorbs moisture efficiently, keeping the wearer comfortable and reducing the perception of dampness during wear.
- Color Retention: Modal takes dye well and maintains color depth through repeated washing, supporting vibrant and consistent colorways across production runs.
- Reduced Pilling: Modal fiber's higher tenacity compared to standard viscose results in improved resistance to surface pilling over time.
- Loop Interior Structure: The uncut french terry loops provide warmth and softness without the bulk of a full fleece, suitable for year-round casual and lounge applications.
- Q: How does modal french terry differ from cotton french terry?
- A: Modal french terry is generally softer, lighter, and more moisture-absorbent than cotton french terry. It also tends to hold color more vibrantly and resists shrinkage better through repeated washing.
- Q: Is spandex included as standard?
- A: The standard construction includes 5% spandex for stretch and recovery. A 100% modal version without spandex is also available upon request.
- Q: What certifications are available?
- A: OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification is available. Please specify your requirements when inquiring.
- Q: Can the weight be adjusted for different seasons?
- A: Yes. We produce modal french terry across a range of weights. Please share your target gsm and intended end use and we will recommend a suitable specification.
